Around AD 50, however, Parthian architects moved away from Hellenistic architectural styles and created a new design - barrel-vaulted, open-fronted halls ('iwans'). Four iwans usually opened from a central courtyard, as seen here at Hatra: this became a basic element in later Iranian architecture.
